According to a recent Dexur study of Medicare inpatient claims data for diabetes in 2016, Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans discharged 109 patients with diabetes, the most of any Louisiana hospital throughout the year. Willis-Knighton Medical Center, located in Shreveport, was the only other hospital in the state to report over 100 discharges during the timeframe with 105 cases. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge ranked 3rd with 87 discharges, St. Francis Medical Center - Downtown in Monroe ranked 4th with 75 discharges, and North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond ranked 5th in volume with 71.

Dexur’s analysis of the most recently available CMS Medicare claims data covering January 2016 through December 2016 showed that Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans, Louisiana earned 3.82% more revenue from super utilizers than the state average, and 7.43% higher than the national average. Dexur analysts identified the hospital’s total Medicare inpatient count of super utilizers, their contribution of discharges, their contribution of LOS and their contribution of revenue at the hospital, state and national level. Super utilizers are responsible for nearly half of the total cost of public healthcare due to their excess emergency department visits and multiple hospital admissions. Their contribution to LOS and revenue of a hospital are relevant metrics for healthcare professionals to create and implement practices that turnover positive clinical and economic outcomes.
