According to a recent Dexur study of Medicare inpatient claims data for diabetes in 2016, Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans discharged 109 patients with diabetes, the most of any Louisiana hospital throughout the year. Willis-Knighton Medical Center, located in Shreveport, was the only other hospital in the state to report over 100 discharges during the timeframe with 105 cases. Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge ranked 3rd with 87 discharges, St. Francis Medical Center - Downtown in Monroe ranked 4th with 75 discharges, and North Oaks Medical Center in Hammond ranked 5th in volume with 71.
Louisiana hospitals were included in the rankings if they accounted for a minimum of 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges between January - December 2016 and at least 11 discharges for diabetes. The 3 different diagnosis related groups within diabetes are DRG-637, DRG-638 and DRG-639, representing diabetes with varying instances of complications and comorbidities. During the analyzed time period, all Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. accounted for a total of 101,978 discharges with diabetes, including 2,093 from Medicare enrollees in Louisiana. DRG-638 (Diabetes With Complication or Comorbidity) was the highest volume DRG of the three, while DRG-639 (Diabetes Without Complication or Comorbidity/Major Complication or Comorbidity) had the lowest number of discharges.
Dexur analysts also identified diabetes discharges for Medicare inpatients at Louisiana hospitals between January 2013 - December 2016 and found that Ochsner Medical Center reported the most diabetes discharges during this four year time period as well with 420 discharges. This was nearly 50 more than the 372 discharges from Willis - Knighton Medical Center and over 100 discharges more than Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center, which accounted for 304. Even at such a high volume, Ochsner actually saw a 3.54% decrease in diabetes discharge volume between 2015 and 2016, whereas 2nd ranking Willis - Knighton experienced a 22.09% increase and 3rd ranking Our Lady of the Lake accounted for a 22.54% increase between these two years.
