Dr. Christopher J. Magovern & Dr. John M. Brown, two Cardiac Surgeons affiliated with Morristown Medical Center (an Atlantic Health System hospital), topped New Jersey state rankings for two major categories of cardiac procedures.

Dr. Magovern performed 380 coronary bypass surgeries, the most of any physician in New Jersey, based on an analysis of inpatient Medicare claims over a five year period from 2013 to 2017. Research has shown that physician case volume is positively associated with better quality outcomes.

Dr. Brown performed the most inpatient cardiac valve and cardiothoracic procedures of any physician in New Jersey, based on an analysis of inpatient Medicare claims over a five year period from 2013 to 2017. Dr. Brown performed 674 such procedures as attending physician and 823 as operating physician, #1 in New Jersey in both categories.

Dr. Magovern earned his MD at Baylor in Houston, Texas; and completed his residencies at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He has been part of Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates since 1998. In addition to coronary bypass procedures, Dr. Magovern performs minimally-invasive valve surgery, off-pump bypass surgery, and robotic surgery.

Dr. Brown earned his MD at Cornell, and stayed there for his general surgery internship, residency, and fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery. He joined Mid-Atlantic Surgical Associates in 1993. Dr. Brown has been actively involved in clinical research and the development of minimally invasive surgical techniques.
