Where is the data from:

Data is from CMS Medicare claims data. The data was further categorized based on source of admissions, DRGs & ICD codes. The time period was 2013 January to 2016 December.

Methodology:

The 30 day readmittance rates were studied from the date of discharge. Readmittances were analyzed for all hospitals (not just the discharging hospital). Revenue was based on the sum of medicare payments in the claims field.

Why is this important:

CMS has several initiatives such as the Hospital Readmissions Reduction Program to reduce 30 day readmission rates. Furthermore, programs such as MACRA measures 30 day readmissions for physicians. Hospitals could have a financial, operational & clinical impact from declining readmission rates.
