Dexur’s analysis of medicare claims of hospitals within a 10-mile radius of Waterloo, Iowa, showed that Allen Hospital and Covenant Medical Center had the best value outcomes over a 90 day episode for Sepsis. Dexur’s value analysis tracks a patient’s episode of care from the date of admission for 90 days and includes the index hospitalizations, rehospitalization, home health, nursing home, and ED costs. Total cost of care data helps patients make appropriate choices and helps local ACOs make appropriate referral choices. The analysis was risk-adjusted, for alive and non-hospice patients and was done at the DRG level, specifically DRG 871: Septicemia or Severe Sepsis without MV >96 Hours with Major Complication or Comorbidity, to adjust for complications and comorbidities.

Dexur recently conducted an analysis on Iowa hospitals that discharged Medicare inpatients with skin infections and determined that three different hospital locations within UnityPoint Health had the three lowest average lengths of stay for a 30-day episode of care including unplanned readmissions in Iowa. UnityPoint Health - Waterloo campus had the lowest average LOS in the state at 3.21 days. This surpassed the 2nd ranked UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's in Sioux City by 0.64 days as St. Luke's in Sioux City averaged 3.85 days. UnityPoint Health - St. Luke's in Cedar Rapids ranked 3rd with an average LOS of 3.98 days. These were the only three hospitals in Iowa with an average LOS below 4 days. Two Mercy Medical Center facilities ranked 4th and 5th for the lowest average LOS. Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa averaged a LOS for a 30-day episode of care at 4.1 days, ranking 4th. Mercy Medical Center - Clinton ranked 5th with an average LOS of 4.13 days. Both UnityPoint Health and Mercy Medical Center each had another hospital within the top 10 Iowa hospitals with the lowest average LOS based on data between January 2013 and December 2016, as can be seen in the graph below.
