A recently conducted analysis on 2016 Medicare claims data found that University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Presbyterian had the highest emergency department hospitalization rate in Pennsylvania of 56.36%, followed by Aria Health - Torresdale with an ED hospitalization rate of 49.67%. The analysis was conducted on the 46 Pennsylvania hospitals with over 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges. ED hospitalization rate refers to the proportion of patients seen in the ED who are subsequently admitted as inpatients at the hospital. It may reveal the resources a hospital has access to in treating patients during emergencies or the nature of discharges a patient population may be more prone to.
