Regional Medical Center of San Jose and Northbay Medical Center Saw Over 25% More Medicare Inpatient Discharges Originate in the Emergency Department than the National Average

A recent analysis conducted by Dexur on CMS administrative claims from January to December 2016 found that both Regional Medical Center of San Jose and Northbay Medical Center had over 90% of their total Medicare inpatient discharges come from the emergency department. This metric was over 25% greater than the national average and over 20% greater than the state average. The study was conducted on the 34 hospitals in Northern California that had over 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges. This ED-related metric can be reflective of the Medicare patient population in a particular region and their specific medical needs.
