According to a recent analysis by Dexur, St. David’s North Austin Medical Center and Seton Medical Center Austin had a greater percentage of length of stay outlier discharges than the average for the nation, state of Texas, and region of Central Texas. LOS outliers are evaluated on the DRG-level, meaning each discharge’s LOS is compared to the average of days spent for the same DRG discharges in the region. Each DRG accounts for the risk and case mix index, so the threshold for outliers are risk-adjusted for the case mix index. The analysis was conducted with CMS administrative claims from January 2016 to December 2016 utilizing data from the two Central Texas hospitals with the highest proportions of LOS outlier discharges, and compared them to the region, state, and nation.
