Revenue per day is calculated by summing all Medicare revenue and dividing by the total patient days in the hospital. Since, revenue from Medicare is risk adjusted at the DRG level, fewer days in the hospital for a fixed DRG payment can lead to lower cost to the hospital (higher revenue per day) and better patient experience (fewer patient-days in hospital).
