Dexur analysts recently examined 2016 inpatient Medicare stent procedure discharges in Ohio and found that OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus accounted for 288 discharges, the most of any major hospital in the state. Cleveland Clinic ranked 2nd with 259 discharges and Ohio State University Hospital, located in Columbus, ranked 3rd with 204. These were the only three facilities in the state with at least 200 stent procedures during the year. Kettering Medical Center in Kettering ranked 4th in volume with 189 discharges while Genesis Hospital in Zanesville ranked 5th with 183.

Hospitals in Ohio were included in the rankings if they reported at least 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges and 11 total stent procedure discharges between January and December of 2016. Four separate diagnosis related groups make up stent procedures, including DRG-246, DRG-247, DRG-248, and DRG-249. In 2016, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. accounted for 149,642 total stent procedure discharges, while Ohio Medicare enrollees accounted for 6,027 discharges, comprising just over 4% of the nation’s total discharge volume.

Not only did Riverside Methodist Hospital rank highest in volume for total stent procedure discharges, they also ranked first in the state in discharge volume for DRG-247 (Percutaneous Cardiovascular Procedures With Drug-Eluting Stent Without Major Complication or Comorbidity), specifically, with 196 discharges. Cleveland Clinic ranked 2nd in DRG-247 discharge volume with 149 discharges while Kettering Medical Center ranked 3rd with 146. No other hospital in Ohio recorded over 130 such discharges. For DRG-246, Riverside Methodist Hospital ranked 2nd in volume with 86 discharges. The only Ohio hospital with more discharges at the DRG level during 2016 was Cleveland Clinic, which accounted for 94 discharges.
