Dexur analysts recently examined all cardiac valve and other major cardiothoracic procedure discharges from Medicare enrollees in 2016 and found that Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport accounted for the lowest average length of stay (LOS) out of all major Tennessee hospitals. At 5.17 days, Holston Valley was the only Tennessee facility to report an average LOS under 6 days. Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville ranked 2nd with a 6.1 day average length of stay, CHI Memorial Hospital Chattanooga ranked 3rd at 6.24 days, The University of Tennessee Medical Center, located in Knoxville, ranked 4th at 6.39 days, and Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City ranked 5th with an average length of stay of 6.93 days. These five facilities were the only major hospitals in Tennessee to report an average LOS under one week for cardiac valve and other major cardiovascular procedures.

Hospitals in Tennessee were included in the rankings if a minimum of 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges and at least 11 DRG-220 (Cardiac Valve And Other Major Cardiothoracic Procedures Without Cardiac Catheterization With Complication or Comorbidity) discharges were accounted for between January and December 2016. DRG-220 was selected for this study as it was the highest volume diagnosis related group within cardiac valve and cardiothoracic procedures with a total of 19,100 discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees in 2016.

Nationally, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. averaged a 6.78 day length of stay for DRG-220. Medicare enrollees within Tennessee alone combined for a 7.03 day average length of stay, a quarter of a day higher than the national average. These figures placed Holston Valley Medical Center as one of only four major Tennessee hospitals to report an average LOS under the national average and one of only five below the state average. Holston Valley also accounted for the lowest average length of stay among Tennessee hospitals between the time period of January 2013 - December 2016 at 5.3 days.
