A recent study conducted by Dexur analysts shows that Virtua Voorhees Hospital in Voorhees, New Jersey accounted for 1,984 Medicare pulmonology discharges during 2016, the most out of any in-state facility. During the time frame, Virtua Voorhees saw over 300 more discharges than the 1,675 discharges accounted for by Community Medical Center in Toms River, which was the second highest discharging hospital for pulmonology discharges in the state. Only two other New Jersey hospitals reported over 1,100 pulmonology discharges during the time period. Jefferson Stratford Hospital ranked 3rd in volume with 1,298 discharges while Inspira Medical Center Vineland ranked 4th in-state with 1,150 discharges.
Dexur analyzed Medicare discharge data from CMS between January - December 2016 and identified all hospitals with 11 or more pulmonology discharges during the time frame; 4,905 hospitals met this criteria, including 75 New Jersey facilities. It is important to note that discharge volume alone is not necessarily an indicator of care quality. However, identification of hospitals with higher volume caseloads in certain procedural areas is valuable to understanding which facilities that members of a community are visiting most often for their care. The field of pulmonology specifically refers to diseases involving the respiratory tract and one of the most common conditions within pulmonology is chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). A case study from Chesapeake Regional Medical Center examines the implementation of a breath-actuated nebulizer (BAN) and its effect on reducing COPD hospitalizations.
Along with accounting for the most pulmonology discharges in-state, Virtua Voorhees Hospital reported the 4th most pulmonology discharges of any U.S. hospital throughout the time frame. The only hospitals to report more pulmonology discharges during the analyzed period were Florida Hospital - Orlando in Orlando, Florida, Christiana Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware and Yale-New Haven Hospital in New Haven, Connecticut. Virtua Voorhees substantial market share of New Jersey Medicare enrollees’ pulmonology may not be entirely surprising to some as the hospital also ranked 2nd in New Jersey for overall Medicare inpatient volume.
