Dexur analysts recently studied Medicare inpatient urology data from October 2015 to September 2016 and found that Dr. Vipul R. Patel, of Florida Hospital Orlando, accounted for 270 urology discharges last year, the most of any U.S. physician. Dr. Patel was the only physician to account for over 200 discharges of this nature during the time period and the only physician in all of Florida to report over 100 discharges. Nationally, the 2nd and 3rd ranked physicians were Dr. David B. Samadi of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, New York and Dr. Thomas Joseph Guzzo of Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The two physicians accounted for 159 and 140 discharges, respectively.
Medicare inpatient urology discharge data was sourced from CMS for an October 2015 - September 2016 timeframe. Physicians were included in the final rankings if they accounted for 11 or more urology discharges during the time period; 7,416 physicians met this criteria.
Within Florida alone, Dr. Patel’s discharge volume is even more impressive compared to peer physicians. For Florida Medicare enrollees specifically, Dr. Patel accounted for 217 discharges, which was 121 discharges more than those reported by Dr. Gaetano Ciancio of Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. Dr. Ciancio’s 96 discharges for Florida Medicare enrollees ranked him 2nd in-state.
Dr. Patel’s contributions to the field of urology go well beyond the operating room; at the hospital level, he is the medical director of the Florida Hospital Cancer Institute Urologic Oncology Program. Within the greater hospital system, Dr. Patel is the medical director of the Global Robotics Institute at Florida Hospital Celebration Health. Dr. Patel is also a professor of Urology at the University of Central Florida College of Medicine in Orlando. Furthermore, Dr. Patel has been given the designation of honorary professor at a number of the world’s esteemed universities, including the University of Milan and the Russian Academy of Science.
