A study of inpatient alcohol/drug abuse discharges at Texas hospitals discovered that Baylor Scott & White Memorial Hospital - Temple had the lowest average length of stay for alcohol/drug patients including unplanned alcohol and drug abuse readmissions during a 30-day episode of care at 3.41 days. They also ranked 1st for lowest average LOS including all readmissions of alcohol/drug abuse patients during a 30-day episode of care at 4.61 days. University Hospital in San Antonio ranked 2nd in both categories with an average LOS with unplanned readmissions of 3.85 days and with all readmissions at 5.04 days. Houston Methodist Hospital ranked 3rd for average LOS of 30-day episode of care including unplanned readmissions at 4.95 days, but ranked 5th for the metric including all readmissions at 6.83 days. Methodist Hospital in San Antonio ranked 4th in both categories with 5.16 days for an average LOS with unplanned readmissions and 6.68 days for an average LOS with all readmissions. Finally, Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano ranked 5th with an average LOS with unplanned readmissions of 5.49 days. They also ranked 3rd for average LOS with all readmissions at 5.87 days.

Hospitals in this analysis were required to have at least 50 DRG-897 discharges in addition to at least 11 readmissions. DRG-897 discharges are defined as alcohol/drug abuse or dependence without rehabilitation therapy without major complication or comorbidity. Patients who were transferred, expired, or discharged against medical advice were excluded from the totals. There were 20 hospitals in this specific study that met the criteria. Two other DRGs are also classified under the alcohol/drug abuse diagnosis; DRG-895 is alcohol/drug abuse or dependence with rehabilitation therapy, and DRG-896 is alcohol/drug abuse or dependence without rehabilitation therapy with major complication or comorbidity. The metrics used in this analysis incorporated the total length of stay during a 30-day episode of care, including the index hospitalization and any readmitted hospitalization. The difference between the metrics comes from how the readmissions are defined; unplanned readmissions are those that are solely admitted through the emergency department while all readmissions include follow-up appointments or future visits for another medical issue.

In addition to having the lowest average LOS for a 30-day episode of care, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Temple had the 2nd lowest readmission rate of the 20 hospitals in this analysis at 21.3%. Their unplanned readmission rate was 10.43%, which ranks them 10th in that category. Texas Health Presbyterian Plano ranked 6th for total readmission rate at 24.49% but 17th for unplanned readmission rate at 18.57%. Houston Methodist Hospital ranked 16th for total readmission rate at 29.91%, but they also had the 9th lowest unplanned readmission rate at 10.26%. University Hospital ranked 12th for total readmission rate at 27.78% and 15th for unplanned readmission rate at 16.67%. Methodist Hospital had a total readmission rate of 33.88%, ranking 17th. They also had an unplanned readmission rate of 19.87%, which ranked 20th. Throughout the nation, the readmission rate was 13.33% while the unplanned readmission rate was 28.09%. Texas had a readmission rate of 10.17% and an unplanned readmission rate of 27.81%.
