Dr. Kalyan Akkineni of Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith was the highest volume physician in Arkansas for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in 2016 with 65 discharges, according to analysts from Dexur. Two other physicians from Sparks Regional ranked 2nd and 3rd as Dr. Mohammed Ur Rehman accounted for 59 discharges and Dr. Mohammad N. Anower had 43. Tying for 3rd in the rankings was Dr. Greg Neaville of White River Medical Center in Batesville. These four physicians were the only physicians in the state to report over 40 COPD discharges throughout the year. Dr. Seth Barnes, who practices at White River Medical Center along with Dr. Neaville, ranked 5th with 37 discharges.
Physicians from Arkansas were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 11 total COPD discharges between January and December 2016. COPD encompasses DRG-190, DRG-191, and DRG-192, which vary in their presence and severity of complications and comorbidities. In 2016, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. reported a total of 318,370 COPD discharges while Medicare enrollees from Arkansas accounted for 4,657 of these discharges. DRG-190 (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease With Major Complication or Comorbidity) was the most popular diagnosis related group of the three, with 161,285 discharges nationally and 2,151 from Arkansas Medicare enrollees.
A supplementary analysis indicates that Dr. Akkineni and Dr. Rehman also ranked highest in discharge volume for Arkansas physicians between 2013-2016. During this four year period, Dr. Akkineni reported 215 discharges and was the only Arkansas physician to report over 200 COPD discharges. Dr. Rehman accounted for 196 discharges. The top five physicians for 2016 all were also in the top five between 2013-2016 but the physicians who ranked 3rd through 5th placed in a different order; over the four years, Dr. Neaville ranked 3rd with 164 discharges, Dr. Barnes ranked 4th with 155, and Dr. Anower ranked 5th with 130.
