Recent Dexur research on Medicare inpatient cardiovascular discharges between October 2015 - September 2016 showed that Dr. Samin Sharma, of The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, New York, was the highest volume cardiovascular physician in the U.S. During the time period, Dr. Sharma accounted for 641 out of the 1,972,008 toal cardiovascular discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees to make up 0.03% of the national market share.

Aside from Dr. Sharma, only one other U.S. physician, Dr. Raj Makkar, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, had 0.03% of the nation's cardiovascular market share. Dr. Makkar was 2nd in cardiovascular discharge volume for U.S. residents by accounting for 629 procedures. He is the Director of Interventional Radiology and Cath Lab at Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute and has extensively researched the potential dangers of valve implants. Dr. Makkar published a paper on the subject in 2011, and earlier this year in March the Lancet published a study led by the doctor.
Another physician from The Mount Sinai Hospital, Dr. Annapoorna Kini, ranked 3rd nationally with close to 400 discharges. The Mount Sinai Hospital was the only hospital to have two physicians rank in the top 10. For reference, only two other pairs of physicians from the same hospital landed in the top 50. From Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis, Dr. Harvey Edward Garrett and Dr. Bradley A. Wolf were ranked 6th and 16th, respectively, while Morristown Medical Center's Dr. John M. Brown and Dr. Steve Xydas were respectively ranked 12th and 49th.
Dexur data shows that DRG-247 was Dr. Sharma's highest volume DRG. For his 280 DRG-247 discharges, the average length of stay for his patients was 1.33 days, nearly half of the 2.59 day average for physicians nationwide for this specific DRG. Dr. Sharma's readmission rates were likely not adversely affected by the low average length of stay for his patients, as the readmission rate for Dr. Sharma's DRG-247 discharges was 12.5%, only 1.4% higher than the national average. Furthermore, according to New York State Department of Health, Dr. Sharma has the highest angioplasty success rate and lowest mortality for an interventional cardiologist in New York state. These clear measures of success, combined with Dr. Sharma's high case volume, supports the oft addressed theory that discharge volume is positively correlated with better quality outcomes.
