A Dexur study of Medicare inpatient nutritional and metabolic disorder discharges shows that Dr. Shandal S. Emanuel of Nash General Hospital in Rocky Mount accounted for more nutritional and metabolic disorder discharges than any other North Carolina physician with 109 discharges between 2013-2016. She was the only physician in the state with more than 100 such discharges during the timeframe. Dr. Daniel L. Crocker, who practiced at Nash General Hospital along with Dr. Emanuel, ranked 2nd with 98 discharges. Dr. Crocker also practiced at Rocky Mount's LifeCare Hospitals of North Carolina. Dr. Emanuel and Dr. Crocker were the only two physicians in North Carolina with more than 60 discharges for these conditions during the four year period.

Physicians from North Carolina were included in the rankings if they accounted for 11 or more total nutritional and metabolic disorder discharges as the attending physician between January 2013 - December 2016; 33 physicians met this criteria. There are two diagnosis related groups within nutritional and metabolic disorders, with DRG-641 (Miscellaneous Disorders Of Nutrition, Metabolism, Fluids And Electrolytes Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) being the higher volume of the two. The other is DRG-640, which is the same diagnosis but with major complication or comorbidity.

Along with ranking highest in volume for the analyzed timeframe, Dr. Emanuel and Dr. Crocker were also the highest volume North Carolina physicians for these conditions in 2016 alone albeit in reverse order. Dr. Crocker ranked 1st with 37 discharges while Dr. Emanuel ranked 2nd with 34. Furthermore, the two physicians also ranked highest in volume for DRG-641, specifically, during both time periods. Between 2013-2016, Dr. Emanuel accounted for 68 discharges while Dr. Crocker had 54. The only other North Carolina physician with 11 or more DRG-641 discharges during this time period was Dr. Sembua S. Danieli, who had 34 discharges. In 2016 alone, Dr. Emanuel had 18 DRG-641 discharges while Dr. Crocker had 17. Again, Dr. Danieli was the only other physician in the state with 11 or more discharges at the DRG level as he accounted for 11 discharges. Dr. Emanuel and Dr. Crocker also both ranked in the top four in discharge volume for DRG-640 during both 2016 and between 2013-2016.
