Louisiana Physicians: Dr. R. Bryan Griffith of Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center Performed the Most Hip and Knee Replacements with 664 Discharges

A study from Dexur analysts indicates that Dr. R. Bryan Griffith, who practices primarily at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, reported 664 hip and knee replacement discharges from Medicare inpatients between 2013 - 2016, the most of any physician in Louisiana. In fact, Dr. Griffith was the only physician in the state to report over 600 hip and knee replacement discharges during the timeframe. Dr. Nathan P. Cohen of Lake Charles Memorial Hospital in Lake Charles ranked 2nd with 586 discharges, Dr. Steven M. Atchison of Specialists Hospital Shreveport in Shreveport ranked 3rd with 582 and Dr. Cambize Shahrdar of Willis-Knighton Medical Center in Shreveport ranked 4th with 579. Dr. Scott Yerger of Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette ranked 5th with 543 and Dr. Sidney L. Bailey of St. Francis Medical Center - Downtown in Monroe ranked 6th with 534. These six physicians were the only physicians in Louisiana with over 500 hip and knee replacement discharges over the four year time period.

Louisiana physicians were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 11 discharges for DRG-470 (Major Joint Replacement or Reattachment Of Lower Extremity Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) between January 2013 - December 2016. During this timeframe, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. combined for a total of 1,948,735 hip and knee replacement discharges, while Medicare enrollees from Louisiana accounted for 22,866 of these discharges.

In 2016 alone, Dr. Griffith accounted for the 3rd highest discharge volume in the state with 161 Medicare discharges. Dr. Atchison ranked 1st with with 185 and Dr. Yerger ranked 2nd with 181. During 2016, the average length of stay for a hip and knee replacement discharge was 2.65 days for Medicare enrollees nationally and 2.71 days for Medicare enrollees in Louisiana. Dr. Griffith, Dr. Atchison, and Dr. Yerger each accounted for average LOS below both national and state averages with rates of 2.1 days,1.8 days, and 1.7 days, respectively.
