Of major Michigan physicians treating pulmonary edema and respiratory failure Medicare inpatients, Dr. Padmaja Manne of Henry Ford Allegiance Health had the lowest 30-day readmission rate at 18.7%, based on a Dexur analysis. Dr. Rupali Abhijit Paradkar, also of Henry Ford Allegiance Health, had the 2nd lowest readmission rate of Michigan physicians for this condition at 22.0%. Dr. Salvador Rojas, who practices at another campus of the same health system, Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, saw 22.2% of his pulmonary edema and respiratory failure patients readmitted. Dr. Christopher Thomas Doig of Garden City Hospital and Dr. Vanessa Marie Hereford of St. Joseph Mercy Livingston tied for 4th place with a readmission rate of 22.7%.

Physicians practicing in Michigan with more than 11 discharges at the DRG level between January 2013 and December 2016 were analyzed in this study. DRG-189, which is defined as pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, was the focus of this condition-specific analysis. A readmission was defined as a Medicare inpatient who was diagnosed with DRG-189 during their index hospital stay and was hospitalized again within 30 days of discharge for any reason at a hospital. With a national readmission rate of 26.47%, 13 Michigan physicians treating pulmonary edema and respiratory failure had rates lower than the nation's average. The state average was just a bit higher than the national standard at 26.94%.

Although many hospitals are actively trying to reduce readmissions, they must also ensure that length of stay is not increasing in an attempt to decrease readmission rates. These five physicians with the lowest readmission rates did not seem to fall into this trend as they were all in the top 10 for lowest average LOS as well while each doctor's average LOS only differed by 0.1 days. Dr. Rojas tied for 2nd with an average LOS of 3.3 days. Dr. Doig followed closely behind at 3.4 days ranking him 4th. Dr. Hereford ranked 6th at 3.5 days while Dr. Paradkar ranked 8th with an average LOS of 3.6. Finally, Dr. Manne ranked 10th overall of Michigan physicians at 3.7 days for average LOS. These physicians varied in terms of discharge volume with Dr. Manne discharging 75 DRG-189 patients during the four years and Dr. Paradkhar discharging 50 in the same time period.
