Dexur analysts studied Medicare Inpatient data for multiple DRGs from CMS and found that Orlando Health Orlando Medical Center, FL accounted for the second-lowest average length of stay (LOS) for heart failure and shock with major complication or comorbidity (MCC) and the lowest LOS major joint replacement of lower extremity without MCC at 5.21 and 1.71, respectively, among top facilities in Florida for Q3 2019. For DRG 470: major joint replacement or reattachment of lower extremity without major complication, the national and state LOS average stands at 2.21 and 2.38, respectively, which is substantially more than Orlando Regional Medical Center’s average of 1.71.

Health Central in Ocoee was a close second with an average of 1.76. There was a significant difference between the hospitals ranked 3rd, and 4th. AdventHealth Orlando ranked 3rd at 2.24 days while Osceola Regional Medical Center in Savannah ranked 4th, just behind in 4th at 2.81 days. Apart from the two mentioned DRGs, Orlando Regional Medical Center edges ahead in multiple other diagnoses like esophagitis, gastroenteritis and miscellaneous, septicemia, or severe sepsis and psychoses. The graph below shows the average LOS for DRG 291 and DRG 470 of national, state, and major hospitals in Florida.

Average LOS has been calculated after including unplanned readmissions within 30 days since discharge, wherein the patient is in the hospital for the index stay and any other days due to the aforementioned reason. Unplanned readmission occurs when the patient is readmitted in the hospital through the emergency department inside 30 days of the index discharge. It is important to note, however, that patients are not necessarily readmitted to the index hospital for subsequent stays. Discharges where the patient expired, was transferred, or was discharged against medical advice were excluded from the totals. After factoring in the exclusions, Orlando Regional Medical had a total of 3,582 hospitalizations with an average LOS of 4.43 days, which is lower than both Florida and national LOS at 4.95 and 5 days, respectively.
