Among the top 50 highest volume Maryland surgeons who treated gastrointestinal hemorrhages, Dr. Naveen Kumar Gupta of Suburban Hospital had the lowest readmission rate at 14.30%, according to a recent analysis by Dexur. The 2nd ranked Dr. Michael Patrick Moran of the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center was the only other physician in Maryland to have a readmission rate under 15%, at 14.90%. Ranking 3rd was Dr. Daniel K. Daniels, who practiced mainly at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, with 15% of his GI hemorrhage Medicare patients readmitted. Dr. Robert D. Mathieson of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital had a readmission rate of 16.70% ranking 4th, while Dr. Vedapurisan Viswanathan rounded out the top five with a rate of 16.90%. The remaining physicians ranked 6th through 10th by lowest readmission rates can be seen in the graph below.

For this analysis, the top 50 DRG-378 discharging physicians practicing primarily in Maryland were included. DRG-378 (GI Hemorrhage with Complication or Comorbidity) is one of three DRGs that encompass all GI hemorrhage diagnoses. DRG-377 (GI Hemorrhage with Major Complication or Comorbidity) and DRG-379 (GI Hemorrhage without Complication or Comorbidity/Major Complication or Comorbidity) are the other two diagnosis-related groups under this condition. Readmission rate was calculated as the percentage of DRG-378 patients who were readmitted to any hospital within 30 days of their index hospitalization; it includes both planned and unplanned visits. The top 10 physicians with the lowest readmission rates, as well as the 11th ranked Dr. Asheesh Sood at 18.6%, all had a readmission rate under the national rate of 18.93%. Only one physician, Dr. Mahmood Solaiman with a rate of 19.1%, had a rate under the state readmission rate of 19.82%, but higher than the national rate of 18.93%.

Although lowering readmission rates can suggest an increased quality of care provided by a physician, analyzing average length of stay as well paints a more complete picture. The top ranked Dr. Gupta for readmission rates had the lowest average LOS of the top 10 physicians analyzed here, averaging a 3.5 day LOS. This ranked him 7th for lowest average LOS. Dr. Onwueme was the only other physicians to perform among the top 10 in both categories as well, ranking 8th for lowest readmission rates at 18% and 10th for lowest average LOS at 3.6 days. Dr. James Stanley Novick had the lowest average LOS of the 50 physicians in this study of physicians treating DRG-378 patients, at exactly 3 days. He ranked 23rd in DRG-378 discharge volume with 66 total discharges.
