An analysis conducted by Dexur found that Dr. Mikhail Uri Karapetian discharged the most Medicare inpatients with DRG-189 (pulmonary edema and respiratory failure) in Southern California between October 2015 and September 2016, with 51 discharges throughout the 12-month period. He surpassed the next highest volume physician for this condition in Southern California by 20 discharges. Dr. Paryus Patel, the 2nd ranked doctor, had 31 discharges for DRG-189. The next three highest volume physicians were Dr. Leonard J. Adelson with 30 discharges, Dr. Jasbir Singh Tiwana with 28 discharges, and Dr. Joel A. Pengson with 24 discharges between October 2015 and September 2016.

Dr. Karapetian practices at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and Barlow Respiratory Hospital, both located in Los Angeles, CA. He accounted for 25% of DRG-189 Medicare discharges at Barlow Respiratory Hospital. Along with DRG-189, Dr. Karapetian also treated patients with other diagnoses including DRG-207: respiratory system diagnosis with ventilator support for over 96 hours. Between October 2015 and September 2016, he totaled 277 Medicare inpatient discharges across all DRGs.

In addition to treating such a high volume of patients, Dr. Karapetian ranked in the top 10% of providers in terms of the average number of services performed per patient. Using Medicare Part B data, it was determined that he averaged 14.7 services per patient. A high volume of DRG-189 Medicare inpatient discharges by Dr. Karapetian may also be partially due to his specialty in geriatrics. By predominantly treating elderly patients, he has gained the specific experience to provide the comprehensive care for Medicare patients with pulmonary edema and respiratory failure.
