Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center's Dr. Michael S. McNevin was Washington's top discharging colorectal surgeon with 330 total discharges between January 2013 and December 2016. No other physician in the state performed more than 200 discharges within the same time period. Dr. Shalini Rao Kanneganti of St. Joseph Medical Center came the closest with 179 discharges. Following closely in 3rd was Dr. Luay Ailabouni of Kadlec Regional Medical Center who discharged 172 Medicare patients undergoing colorectal procedures. Multicare Good Samaritan Hospital's Dr. Christopher Neuman Petty was the last physician in these rankings to discharge more than 150 colorectal Medicare inpatients with 156 discharges. Ranking 5th was Dr. Phillip Dean, who practiced primarily at Covenant Medical Center, with 122 discharges. Physicians that were ranked 6th through 10th ranked in discharge volume performed between 114 through 107 procedures and can be seen in the graph below.

Of the top 50 analyzed physicians in Washington, these top 10 were the only colorectal physicians who performed more than 100 discharges during the four year time period. Interestingly, none of the top 10 physicians were primarily associated with the same hospitals. The only commonality was between the top ranked Dr. McNevin and the 6th ranked Dr. Adam Herz Juviler who both practiced at different locations of Providence Health & Services – Dr. McNevin at Sacred Heart Medical Center and Dr. Juviler at Holy Family Hospital, both in Spokane.

This analysis of all colorectal discharges can also be paired with an analysis of quality metrics for DRG-330: major large and small bowel procedures with complication or comorbidity; the data was analyzed during the same four-year time period. For this particular set of procedures, the top four physicians were the same as for all colorectal procedures – Dr. McNevin with 94 discharges, Dr. Kannegati with 92 discharges, Dr. Aliabouni with 65 discharges, and Dr. Petty with 64 discharges. Dr. Bastawrous, who ranked 7th for all colorectal procedure discharge volume, had the lowest average LOS for DRG-330 at 5.0 days. Dr. Aliabouni and Dr. McNevin ranked 2nd and 3rd for lowest average LOS of DRG-330 procedures at 5.4 and 5.7 days, respectively. These values can be compared to state and national values between 2013 and 2016 of 7.28 and 7.89 days, respectively. This suggests that the top discharging physicians may also be producing better quality outcomes for patients.
