Dexur's recent analysis of CMS Medicare claims data for the time period of January 2016 through December 2016 showed that McLeod Regional Medical Center, in Florence, South Carolina, discharge rate to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) was lower than the state and national averages by 3.54% and 7.18%, respectively.  Dexur identified Medicare inpatient discharges, discharges to SNFs, and the percentage of SNF discharges at the national, state, and individual hospital level.  SNF discharges are an important metric that healthcare professionals can use to determine the population of patients a hospital serves, as well as the average quality of care that is reached at point of discharge for a hospital.  Below is a graph highlighting the highest discharging categories at McLeod Regional Medical Center and their percentage of discharges to SNFs compared to the state and national averages.

The non-surgical category had 8,244 total discharges and 13.57% were discharged to an SNF; this is only 0.33% less than the state’s average, but 5.23% less than the national average.  Hospitalization from the ED as a source of admission had 7,150 total discharges, and 15.01% were discharged to an SNF; this was significantly less than the state and national averages by 3.8% and 6.52%, respectively.  The hospital’s surgical category has the third most discharges at 3,384 and 9.19% were discharged to an SNF; this was 3.52% less than the state average and 12.16% less than the national average. Of the three highest discharging categories, the surgical category held the most significant gap between the hospital and national averages. 

McLeod Regional Medical Center is the top high volume discharging hospital for Medicare inpatients in South Carolina between January and December 2016, according to Dexur data.  The hospital has frequently achieved better rates in comparison to national averages of quality outcomes.  The Joint Commission has also honored the hospital as a Top Performer on Key Quality Measures  and mentioned the hospital in America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality & Safety for their excellence in accountability measure performance for pneumonia and heart failure.
