Dexur analysts recently studied 2016 inpatient pneumonia discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees and found that Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta had the lowest average length of stay for DRG-193 out of any major Georgia hospital with a 3.27 day average length of stay. DeKalb Medical Center Main, located in Decatur, GA ranked 2nd with an average LOS of 4.2 days and Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton ranked 3rd with a 4.28 day average length of stay. Doctors Hospital of Augusta in Augusta, GA and Redmond Regional Medical Center in Floyd, GA tied for 4th lowest average length of stay in Georgia with an average LOS of 4.33 days at the DRG level.
Each of the hospitals analyzed accounted for over 3,500 Medicare inpatient discharges between January and December 2016 and at least 11 discharges for DRG-193, which represents simple pneumonia and pleurisy with major complication or comorbidity. 1,005 U.S. hospitals met this criteria, including 32 within the state of Georgia. Statewide, the average length of stay for Georgia Medicare enrollees was 5.49 days, nearly identical to the nation’s average LOS of 5.47 days.
Grady Memorial Hospital was the only Georgia hospital to account for an average LOS under 4 days for DRG-193. Even more impressive is the fact that Grady Memorial had the 3rd lowest average length of stay out of all U.S. hospitals during the time period even while the average Georgia Medicare enrollee was being discharged at a similar speed compared to the national average. Furthermore, Grady Memorial was one of only 7 hospitals to report an average length of stay under 3.5 days in 2016. For pneumonia cases, average LOS is an important quality metric that hospitals track along with skilled nursing facility (SNF) discharge rates, readmission rates and mortality rates among others. Another Dexur article, which examines potential reforms and interventions in reducing pneumonia readmission rates can be found here.
