Dexur’s analysis of the most recently available CMS data from January to December 2016 revealed that Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia had higher rates of readmission back to the same hospital than the state and national by 2.72% and 0.98%, respectively.  Emory University Hospital was the top discharging hospital by volume in Atlanta for Medicare inpatients, and the third highest in the state.  Dexur analyzed patients who were readmitted within 30 days and their rates of readmission to the same (index) hospital and to a different hospital.  30-day readmission rate is a widely used metric by healthcare professionals to evaluate quality of care; index hospital readmission rates are significant for determining quality of care for particular specialties at specific hospitals. Below is a graph indicating the hospital, state and national rates of 30-day readmissions to the same hospital for six divisions.

Rate of 30-Day Readmissions to Same Hospital

for 6 Categories at Hospital, State & National Level

Looking at the data below, the three divisions with the highest count for 30-day readmissions were cardiovascular, urology, and oncology/hematology.  Two of the three divisions saw higher readmissions rates for patients returning back to their hospital compared to the state and national average. The cardiovascular division was the only one with a lower rate of readmissions back to same hospital than the state and nation at 55.13%; this was a lesser average compared to the state and nation by 2.75% and 0.95%, respectively.  72.96% of urology 30-day readmissions returned to the same hospital; this was higher than the state average by 9.84% and higher than the national average by 8.25%.  70.75% of the oncology/hematology 30-day readmissions returned to the same hospital; this was higher than the state by 3.62, and than the nation by 2.23%.

The Emory University Hospital’s Emory Winship Cancer Institute is highly regarded for its oncology and hematology patient care.  Their physicians from all different hospital divisions collaborate to provide comprehensive care.  They are a pioneering research facility, with many of the newest therapies available, as well as over 150 clinical trials.  The meticulous care provided for cancer patients may be behind their higher readmission rates back to same hospital.
