A Dexur study of 2016 inpatient Medicare claims data indicates that Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg accounted for more respiratory failure discharges than other major hospital in Mississippi with 199 discharges. North Mississippi Medical Center - Tupelo ranked 2nd with 188 discharges and Baptist Memorial Hospital - Desoto ranked 3rd with 187. These three hospitals were the only facilities in Mississippi to report over 150 respiratory failure discharges during 2016.

Mississippi hospitals were included in the rankings if they accounted for over 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges and at least 11 DRG-189 (Pulmonary Edema And Respiratory Failure) discharges between January - December 2016; only 12 hospitals in the state met this criteria. Throughout the U.S., all Medicare enrollees accounted for 174,207 DRG-189 discharges during the time period. Mississippi Medicare enrollees made up only 1.3% of these discharges with a total of 2,315 discharges.

Out of the 2,866 U.S. hospitals that reported over 11 DRG-189 discharges during the time frame (including hospitals that did not report 3,500+ total Medicare inpatient discharges) Forrest General ranked 62nd in respiratory failure discharge volume. The hospital also ranked 2nd in volume for total inpatient discharges in Mississippi. Forrest General’s market share for DRG-189 improved considerably in 2016 as the hospital was only 4th highest ranked in Mississippi DRG-189 discharge volume for the combined time period of January 2013 - December 2016 with a total of 535 discharges. During this four year time period, Baptist Memorial Hospital - DeSoto led the state with 759 discharges for DRG-189, North Mississippi Medical Center - Tupelo ranked 2nd with 569 and Baptist Medical Center in Jackson ranked 3rd with 538.
