Dexur’s recent analysis of CMS Medicare claims data from the year of 2016 showed that Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, Florida had a higher percentage of length of stay (LOS) outliers compared to the state and national averages by 1.46% and 2.31%, respectively. Dexur analysts identified Medicare inpatients’ total discharges, total LOS outliers, and percentage of LOS outliers at the hospital, state and national level.  This metric is significant to healthcare professionals because LOS outliers are costly for both hospitals and claims payers—keeping a low count of LOS outliers is beneficial for both the hospital and patients.  A background on LOS outliers and methodology for data collection can be read here. Below is a graph depicting the percentage of LOS outliers from several popular hospital categories for the hospital, state, and nation.

Percentage of LOS Outliers

for 6 Categories at the Hospital, State & National Level

The three highest volume discharging divisions at Osceola Regional Medical Center from Medicare inpatients were cardiovascular, neurology, and orthopedics; the three divisions varied in averages of LOS outliers compared to the state and national averages.  15.54% of the cardiovascular division’s discharges were LOS outliers; this was higher than the state and national averages by 3.01% and 3.79%, respectively. The hospital’s neurology discharges were made up of 11.68% of LOS outliers; this was less than the state’s average by 3.53%, and less than the national average by 4.04%.  The orthopedics division showed that 10.34% of their total discharges were LOS outliers; this was lower than  the state average by 0.75%, but minorly higher than the national average by 0.5%.

Osceola Regional Medical Center’s Heart and Vascular Institute was accredited by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care for their Chest Pain Center (CPC) with Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI); this is the only chest pain center in Osceola County with PCI. They are also recipients of the Gold Seal of Approval Accreditation by the Joint Commission, and have been honored with their highest recognition in quality Top Performer in Quality Measures; they are one of only two hospitals in Central Florida to be recognized as such. The slightly higher count for LOS outliers does not necessarily reflect on the hospital; it may be a reflection of a higher count of unique cases at the hospital due to the comprehensive care offered.
