Dexur analysts recently studied physicians in Michigan treating kidney and urinary tract infections and found that DMC Detroit Receiving Hospital's Dr. Leonard Ellison Jr. discharged the most Medicare inpatients with kidney and urinary tract infections with 190 total cases between January 2013 and December 2016. He was the only Michigan physician to account for more than 150 kidney and UTI discharges during the time period. The 2nd ranked Dr. Gary B. Langnas at Beaumont Hospital, Troy came in at 149 discharges over four years and was followed by Dr. Ghassan Atto of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital and Dr. Kunadi Reddy of Genesys Regional Medical Center who tied for 3rd with 140 discharges each. Dr. Arash Kiarash, who practiced primarily at Beaumont Health, Taylor, and Dr. Naveed Mahfooz of St. Mary's of Michigan Medical Center each had 125 discharges, tying for 5th. The top 12 physicians for kidney and UTI discharge volume are shown the graph below.

The top 50 highest volume physicians for kidney and UTI discharges were included in this analysis; each of these physicians accounted for at least 58 discharges as the attending physician. Kidney and UTI conditions encompass two primary DRGs: DRG-690 (Kidney and Urinary Tract Infections without Major Complication or Comorbidity) and DRG-689 (Kidney and Urinary Tract Infections with Major Complication or Comorbidity). Of the 50 total physicians in this analysis, only the top 12 had more than 100 discharges for the four-year time period.

Discharge volume by DRG provides an in-depth look at exactly what kind of cases physicians are treating. Although DRG-689 is less common than DRG-690, DRG-689 includes major complications or comorbidities, which tend to create more complex cases. Dr. Ellison Jr. also ranked 1st for DRG-689 discharge volume during the analyzed time period with 90 discharges. Dr. Reddy, who tied for 3rd for total kidney and UTI discharge volume, ranked 2nd in DRG-689 discharge volume with 81 discharges. The 5th ranked Dr. Kiarash for total volume, ranked 3rd with 72 DRG-689 discharges. Dr. Langnas, the 2nd ranked overall physician by total condition discharge volume, placed 4th with 62 DRG-689 discharges.
