Endocrinology is the study of medicine pertaining to the endocrine system, the human body’s hormone control system. The field of endocrinology is a specialty area so the total number of endocrinology discharges across the U.S. pales in comparison to the discharge volume of a significantly higher volume procedural area like orthopedics. For reference, there were 1,364,880 orthopedic discharges accounted for by U.S. residents during the time period of October 2015 – September 2016 while only 359,872 endocrinology discharges were attributed to U.S. residents during the same timeframe.
Out of these 359,872 endocrinology discharges, Dr. Hershel Jackson, who is affiliated with Providence – Providence Park Hospital, DMC Harper University Hospital and DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital, all located in Michigan, accounted for the highest number of discharges. Dr. Jackson accounted for 72 total endocrinology discharges to make up 0.02% of the 359,872 Medicare endocrinology discharges for U.S. residents during the aforementioned time period.
The top five physicians in terms of U.S. resident endocrinology discharge volume all come from different states. Dr. Hrair Simonian, who practices at Sparks Regional Medical Center in Fort Smith, Arkansas was 2nd in U.S. resident endocrinology discharge volume by accounting for 68 endocrinology discharges and 0.02% of the nation’s total endocrinology discharges. Dr. Shaukat Iftikhar, of Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana was 3rd and accounted for 61 and 0.02% of discharges. Dr. Harold Stringer, of Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, was 4th and accounted for 59 and 0.02% of discharges. Dr. Rohitas Agarwal, who practices with Adventist Health System in Florida, rounded out the top five in U.S. resident endocrinology discharge volume when he accounted for 53 and 0.01% of U.S. resident endocrinology discharges.
