A recent Dexur analysis of Medicare inpatient claims from CMS shows that Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur Campus had the lowest readmission rate in Alabama for intracranial hemorrhage or cerebral infarction discharges at 22.5% between 2013 - 2016. Marshall Medical Center North in Guntersville and Marshall Medical Center South in Boaz ranked 2nd and 3rd with respective readmission rates of 23.33% and 24.41%. Regional Medical Center - Anniston ranked 4th at 26.94% and Providence Hospital, located in Mobile, ranked 5th in the state with a readmission rate of 28.78%.
Alabama hospitals were included in the analysis if they accounted for a minimum of 3,500 total Medicare inpatient discharges in 2016 and at least 11 inpatient readmissions for DRG-065 (Intracranial Hemorrhage or Cerebral Infarction With Complication or Comorbidity or TPA [tissue plasminogen activator] In 24 Hours) between January 2013 - December 2016. During the time period, all U.S. Medicare enrollees averaged a 36.21% readmission rate at the DRG level, only slightly higher than the 35.98% readmission rate accounted for by Medicare enrollees from Alabama. In 2016 alone, the national rate and the rate for Alabama were identical at 35.93%.
Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur’s readmission rate for intracranial hemorrhage and cerebral infarction discharges has improved over the course of the past few years as the hospital reported a 20.59% rate for the year of 2016. Flowers Hospital in Dothan had the 2nd lowest DRG-065 readmission rate between January - December 2016 and Providence Hospital ranked 3rd at 30.91%. Regional Medical Center - Anniston ranked 4th at 31.25% and St. Vincent’s East, located in Birmingham ranked 5th at 32.79%.
