A Dexur analysis of 2016 Medicare inpatient discharges for alcohol, drug abuse, or dependence found that Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur Campus had the lowest average length of stay of all major Alabama hospitals with an average LOS of 2.58 days. DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa ranked 2nd with an average length of stay of 2.84 days and joined Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur as one of only two in-state facilities to report an average LOS under 3 days for this condition. Mobile Infirmary, located in Mobile, and UAB Hospital in Birmingham tied for the 3rd lowest average LOS at exactly 3 days and Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan ranked 5th at 3.61 days.

Hospitals were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 3,500 total inpatient discharges from Medicare enrollees and a minimum of 11 discharges for DRG-897, which represents alcohol, drug abuse or dependence without rehabilitation therapy without major complication or comorbidity; 13 Alabama hospitals met this criteria. During the analyzed time frame, the nation averaged a 5.57 day average length of stay, 0.11 days above the Alabama state average of 5.46 days.

In addition to reporting the state’s lowest average length of stay at the DRG level throughout 2016, Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur Campus also saw the highest number of discharges for DRG-897 with 72 discharges, four more than the 2nd highest volume hospital, Gadsden Regional Medical Center, which accounted for 68. Following Gadsden Regional, there is a substantial drop-off in volume, as the 3rd ranking DCH Regional Medical Center accounted for only 45 discharges. Furthermore, an analysis of all inpatient discharges from January 2013 to December 2016 showed that Decatur Morgan Hospital - Decatur had a 13.4% readmission rate for DRG-897, 8.59% lower than the Alabama hospital with the 2nd lowest readmission rate during the time period (only 4 Alabama hospitals accounted for 11 or more DRG-897 readmissions throughout 2016).
