Recent Dexur analysis of CMS Medicare claims data for 2016 showed that Danbury Hospital located in Danbury, Connecticut had 20.31% of their revenue contributed by prior hospitalizations within 30 days. This rate is lower than the state average by 2.97% and lower than the national average by 6.61%. Revenue and length of stay (LOS) contributions from prior hospitalizations within 30 days are key metrics for healthcare professionals to assess a hospital's cost-effectiveness and quality improvement, especially since the implementation of the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program (HRRP) in 2015. You can read about 30 day readmission contribution to revenue and percentage of days from length of stay contributed from prior hospitalizations within 30-days here.

The three hospital divisions with the highest percentage of revenue contribution from Medicare inpatients priorly hospitalized within 30 days were neurology, psychiatry and mental disorders, and oncology and hematology. The neurology division’s payment per prior hospitalization within 30-days was $1,935; the total percentage of revenue contributed by prior hospitalizations within 30-days from this department totaled to 40.67%; this is greater than the state average by 4.47%, but lower than the national average by 5.02%. The gap between the percent of total days from LOS contributed by 30 day readmissions and the percent of revenue contributing to 30 day readmissions was very small at 1.3%. A relatively small gap between percentage of LOS and percentage of revenue indicates a similar payment per patient day for prior hospitalizations and non-prior hospitalizations.

The psychiatry and mental disorders division also saw a higher percentage of revenue contributed from 30-day readmissions compared to the state and national averages; they received $1,021 per every prior hospitalization within 30-days, which totaled to 34.82% in revenue contributed from 30-day prior hospitalizations. This was higher than the state and national averages by 1.85% and 1.28%, respectively. The gap between their percent of total days from LOS and the percent of revenue contributed by prior hospitalizations within 30-days was also small at 0.49%.

The oncology and hematology division was the only division of the three that saw less revenue contributed by prior hospitalizations within 30-days compared to the state and national percentages of revenue. They received $1,916 per 30-day prior hospitalization which totaled to 25.32% of revenue from prior hospitalizations within 30-days; the hospital’s average for the year was 7.31% lower than the state’s, and 8.88% lower than the nation’s. The gap between their percent of revenue and the percent of total days from LOS contributed by prior hospitalizations within 30-days was just as insignificant as the other two divisions at 1.53%.

Danbury Hospital is the fourth highest volume hospital for Medicare inpatients in Connecticut, according to Dexur’s data. The Praxair Cancer Center of Danbury Hospital provides comprehensive care unique to every patient case. Being that they house a cancer center, the consistent access to cancer treatment equipment may allow for smaller payments per patient in contrast to hospitals not specialized for cancer patients. The quality care for cancer patients offered at Danbury Hospital may encourage patients with a prior hospitalization within 30-days to return here or make this hospital their new place of care.
