A recent Dexur analysis of all colorectal discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees shows that Dr. Hani Baradi of INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, in Oklahoma City, was the highest volume colorectal physician in the U.S. last year, accounting for 151 discharges. Only one other physician across the U.S. saw over 100 colorectal discharges during this same October 2015 - September 2016 timeframe; Dr. Najjia Mahmoud of Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania accounted for 103 discharges. The only hospital including two of the top 10 highest volume colorectal physicians last year was UNC REX Healthcare’s Rex Hospital in Raleigh, where Dr. Sankar Naidu Adusumilli and Dr. Matthew Jared Strouch were the 4th and 9th ranked, respectively.

Dr. Baradi’s 151 discharges made up 0.12% of the national colorectal market share. With 3,145 U.S. physicians accounting for 11 or more colorectal discharges during the analyzed time period, this seemingly small value becomes substantial. While practicing with INTEGRIS, Dr. Baradi accounted for 7.1% of the 2,069 colorectal discharges from Oklahoma Medicare enrollees during the analyzed time period. This was more than double the market share than the next highest volume physician for colorectal discharges among Medicare enrollees; Oklahoma Surgical Hospital’s Dr. Craig Stephen Johnson’s 61 discharges from in-state Medicare enrollees made up 2.95% of all colorectal discharges in Oklahoma.

The three DRGs most commonly associated with Dr. Baradi’s discharges during the time period were DRG-329, DRG-330 and DRG-331. These three DRGs represent major small and large bowel procedures, each with varying levels of complications or comorbidities. Dr. Mahmoud, the nation’s second highest volume colorectal physician, was associated only with DRGs 330 and 331. DRG-329 represents the most complicated DRG of the three, as DRG-329 includes major small and large bowel procedures with major complications or comorbidities.

Dr. Baradi is a colon and rectal surgeon who earned his medical degree from the University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan before coming to the U.S. to complete his residency and fellowship training in colorectal surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. Dr. Baradi began practicing at INTEGRIS Baptist in 2008 and is an active proponent for increased colorectal cancer screenings in Oklahoma.
