A Dexur study of coronary bypass data from U.S. Medicare enrollees indicates that CHI St. Luke's Health - Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston accounted for 169 total coronary bypass discharges in 2016, the most of any hospital within the Greater Houston area. The only hospital in the entire state of Texas to see more coronary bypass discharges than Baylor St. Luke’s was Methodist Hospital, located in San Antonio, which accounted for 227 discharges. Within the Greater Houston area, Houston Methodist Hospital was not far behind Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, as Houston Methodist ranked 2nd in volume out of all Greater Houston hospitals with 161 discharges. Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center ranked 3rd with 94 discharges, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital ranked 4th with 65 and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center ranked 5th with 52. Although the three Memorial Hermann facilities ranked 3rd through 5th, a substantial drop-off in volume can be observed between the top two and subsequent three highest volume hospitals.
Hospitals were included in the rankings if the hospital accounted for over 3,500 total Medicare discharges and at least 11 coronary bypass discharges between January - December 2016; 13 facilities in the Greater Houston met this criteria. This same criteria was also used for an analysis of the discharges between January 2013 - December 2016; Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center landed at the top of these 4-year rankings as well by accounting for 736 total coronary bypass discharges while Houston Methodist Hospital accounted for 667. Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center ranked 3rd with 356 discharges and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital ranked 4th with 311. Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, which only ranked 10th highest in the 2016 rankings, ranked 5th highest in discharge volume between 2013 and 2016 with 186 discharges.
Along with ranking highest for total coronary bypass discharges in 2016 as well as between 2013-2016, Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center ranked highest for various diagnosis related groups during the time periods as well. In 2016, the hospital accounted for more discharges than any other Greater Houston hospital for DRG-233 (Coronary Bypass With Cardiac Catheterization With Major Complication or Comorbidity) as well as DRG-235 (Coronary Bypass Without Cardiac Catheterization With Major Complication or Comorbidity). Baylor St. Luke’s was also the only facility in the Greater Houston area and one of only three hospitals throughout Texas to account for at least 11 DRG-231 (Coronary Bypass With PCTA [Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty] With Major Complication or Comorbidity) discharges during 2016.
