Recent Dexur analysis on CMS claims data found that Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis accounted for the most spine discharges for U.S. Medicare enrollees between January and December of 2016. Abbott Northwestern's 1,006 discharges made up just over a half percent of the nation's total discharges and the hospital saw over 130 spine discharges more than the nation's next highest volume hospital.

Similar Dexur analysis from CMS claims data between January - December 2016 indicated that 21.98% of Minnesota Medicare enrollee spine discharges were accounted for by Abbott Northwestern, pointing to the hospital's dominant market share of spine discharges within their home state. The hospital accounted for over 500 more spine discharges than Mayo Clinic Hospital - St. Mary's Campus, which was the next highest volume hospital in Minnesota for Medicare spine discharges. Mayo Clinic ranked 12th nationally for spine discharge volume with 589 discharges attributed to the hospital during the Jan - Dec 2016 timeframe. Only 10 hospitals across the entire U.S. accounted for more than 500 spine discharges during the time period analyzed. Abbott Northwestern is able to provide quality care within this specialized field by having a dedicated Spine Institute as well as a rehabilitation institute, which is currently accredited by CARF (Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities) for their spinal cord system of care.

Out of the top 10 highest volume hospitals for spine discharges, Abbott Northwestern had the lowest readmission rate at 11.13% along with the second lowest average length of stay at 4.11 days. The only hospital in this top 10 with a lower average length of stay was Christiana Hospital in Delaware, although the readmission rate here was over 4.5% higher than the rate at Abbott Northwestern. Compared to all of Minnesota, Abbott Northwestern's readmission rate for spine discharges was only about 1% lower than the state rate of 12.26%. Furthermore, the hospital's average length of stay was only 0.15 days higher than the state average of 3.97 days. This means that although Abbott Northwestern has very strong quality metrics within the spinal discipline when compared to the nation, their metrics align with the quality measures for spinal discharges throughout the state of Minnesota.
