Dexur's recent analysis of CMS Medicare claims data for the time period of January through December 2016 revealed that Carilion Medical Center’s discharge rate to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) was higher than the state and national averages by 8.42% and 7.9%, respectively.  Dexur identified Medicare inpatient discharges, discharges to SNFs, and the percentage of SNF discharges at the national, state, and individual hospital level.  SNF discharges are an important metric that healthcare professionals can use to determine the demographics of the population of patients a hospital serves, as well as the average state a patient is in at  point of discharge from a specific hospital.  Below is a graph highlighting the highest discharging categories at Carilion Medical Center and their percentage of discharges to SNFs compared to the state and national averages.

Rate of Discharge to SNF for 6 Categories

at the Hospital, State & National Level

According to the data below, the top three high volume discharging categories at Carilion Medical Center were cardiovascular, orthopedic, and neurology.  All three categories surpassed the state and national rates of discharges to SNFs.  18.49% of cardiovascular discharges were admitted into SNFs; this was 4.91% higher than the state rate, and 4.19% higher than the national rate.  Nearly 50% of orthopedic discharges were admitted into SNFs; this rate was significantly greater than the state and national rates by 14.54% and 15.25%, respectively.  31.15% of neurology discharges were discharged to SNFs, exceeding the state rate by 9.27%, and the national rate by 8.22%.

The Carilion Medical Center, located in Roanoke, Virginia, is the main facility of the non-profit health system Carilion Clinic and is dedicated to education and research.  SNF discharges do not necessarily speak to the quality of care provided by a hospital; a hospital cannot decide if the patient will be admitted to a SNF or go home, it is ultimately the patient’s decision or their caregiver’s decision.  Carilion Medical Center has been fully accredited by The Joint Commision and is a Magnet designation appointed by the American Nurses Credential Center.  The high count of SNF discharges may speak more accurately to the population demographics that Carilion Medical Center serves.
