Dexur’s analysis of the most recently available CMS claims data between January-December 2016 shows that St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma earned 11.97% lower revenue per patient day compared to the state’s average and 19.82% lower revenue than the nation’s average.  Dexur identified Medicare inpatients’ total payments, total days, and total payments per day at the national, state, and individual hospital level.  These metrics are commonly used to compare cost of medical care across the country.   Below is a graph highlighting the higher volume hospital divisions and the payment per day for each at the hospital, state and national level.

Percentage of Revenue per Patient Day

for 6 Categories at the Hospital, State & National Level

Looking at the Dexur data below, the three hospital divisions with the highest total payments were cardiovascular, orthopedic, and pulmonology.  All three divisions had a lower payment per day at St. Francis Hospital compared to Oklahoma and the nation.  The cardiovascular discharges accounted for a total of 12,171 hospitalized days. The hospital’s payment per day totaled to 8.23% less than the state average and 14.24% less than the national average.  The orthopedic discharges totaled 6,796 days of hospitalization.  This hospital division saw the greatest difference in payment per day compared to the state and national average; it earned 23.66% less than the state, and 33.06% less than the national.  The pulmonology discharges added up to 7,648 days of hospitalization. Its payment per day was less than the state and nation averages by 17.78% and 22.91%, respectively.

St. Francis Hospital discharged the most Oklahoma Medicare inpatients, according to relevant Dexur data; therefore, the lower revenue per patient day compared to the state and national averages is interesting.  The hospital focuses on timely and proper care for patients.  They have implemented a Stroke Program with a designated team trained to respond to incoming patients accordingly.  Upon admission into the emergency department, all patients follow a similar process moving forward; they are immediately set up for CT scans and diagnostic screenings.  The stroke team then evaluates the patient’s severity level according to the tests and their past medical records to transfer them to the appropriate physician. With in-depth programs like this one, often times a hospital is able to utilize medical tools resourcefully for a less costly average per day.
