Dexur analysts recently examined all major small and large bowel procedure discharges in Georgia from 2013-2016 and found that Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville accounted for the lowest readmission rate of all major Georgia hospitals with a rate of 10.76%. Gwinnett Medical Center–Lawrenceville ranked 2nd with a readmission rate of 11.9% and joined Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville as the only other Georgia facility to report a readmission rate under 13%. Piedmont Henry Hospital, located in Stockbridge ranked 3rd with a rate of 13.04%, South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta ranked 4th with a rate of 13.4% and Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville ranked 5th with a 13.42% rate.

All major Georgia hospitals were included in the analysis and were defined as facilities that had more than 3,500 total inpatient discharges and a minimum of 11 DRG-330 (Major Small And Large Bowel Procedures With Complication or Comorbidity) discharges between January - December 2016. During the January 2013 - December 2016 time period, the national readmission rate for DRG-330 was 17.54%, nearly identical to the Georgia readmission rate of 17.46%.

DRG-330 was the highest volume diagnosis related group out of the 9 DRGs within the colorectal discipline; U.S. Medicare enrollees accounted for a total of 219,690 DRG-330 discharges between 2013-2016, including 6,084 from Medicare enrollees from Georgia. The next highest volume colorectal DRG was DRG-329 (Major Small And Large Bowel Procedures With Major Complication or Comorbidity), which encompassed 153,407 discharges from U.S. Medicare enrollees, including 4,208 from Georgia enrollees. Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, located in Albany, had the lowest readmission rate for DRG-329 with a 13.83% rate. Meanwhile, Piedmont Fayette Hospital, which ranked 5th in the DRG-330 readmission rate rankings, ranked 2nd for DRG-329 with a readmission rate of 17.27%.
