A recent study by Dexur analysts indicates that Dr. Aileen Garcia-Gayoso of Methodist University Hospital in Memphis accounted for 256 Medicare inpatient discharges with renal failure, the most of any Tennessee physician between 2013-2016. She was the only physician in the state with more than 200 discharges for this condition. Methodist University Hospital was also the practicing location for the next four highest volume physicians for the condition. Dr. Hany M. Habashy ranked 2nd with 184 discharges, while Dr. Randy Villanueva ranked 3rd with 154 discharges. Dr. Oluwatoyin J. Agbaosi ranked 4th with 152 discharges and Dr. Charles L. Carter ranked 5th with 150 discharges. These were the only physicians in the state with 150 or more renal failure discharges over the four year period.

Dr. Joseph L. Pratt of Magnolia Regional Health Center in Corinth accounted for 226 Medicare inpatient kidney and urinary tract infection (UTI) discharges between 2013-2016, the most of any physician in Mississippi, according to a Dexur analysis. Dr. Pratt was the only physician in the state to report over 150 such discharges during the time frame. Dr. Nurudeen Shekoni of St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson ranked 2nd with 147 discharges, while Dr. Gabriel Zevallos of Southwest Mississippi Regional Medical Center in McComb ranked 3rd with 114. Dr. Don A. Gibson ranked 4th with 112 discharges practicing at both St. Dominic Hospital and Baptist Medical Center in Jackson. These were the only four Mississippi physicians with over 100 discharges for the condition. Dr. Zina D. Lee, also of Baptist Medical Center, rounded out the top five with 96 discharges.

Dexur analysts studied Maryland physicians who performed major large and small bowel procedures between January 2013 and December 2016 and determined that two physicians, Dr. Francis S. Rotolo of Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Dr. James Joseph Zalucki of Howard County General Hospital tied for the lowest average LOS at 4.3 days. Dr. George Apostolides of Greater Baltimore Medical Center ranked 3rd in the state with an average LOS of 4.6 days. The 4th ranked Dr. Mari Madsen of Anne Arundel Medical Center rounded out the only four physicians in Maryland to average a LOS for major small and large bowel procedures under 5 days, averaging 4.9 days per case. Dr. Joseph Donovan Dirocco, also at Greater Baltimore Medical Center, averaged 5.2 days for major large and small bowel procedure LOS.

According to a study of Medicare inpatient discharges by Dexur analysts, Dr. John W. Beckner, of Hamilton Medical Center in Dalton, had a 12.3% readmission rate for psychoses discharges between 2013-2016, the lowest rate of any physician in Georgia. The only other physician in the state with a readmission rate below 15% was Dr. Dan Phillips of Navicent Health, who ranked 2nd with a 14.4% rate. Dr. Muhammad Sandvi, who practices at Hamilton Medical Center along with Dr. Beckner, ranked 3rd with an 18.4% readmission rate while Dr. Deepti Bhasin of Houston Medical Center in Warner Robins ranked 4th with a 19.1% rate. Dr. Prema Sanne ranked 5th at 19.4%, while splitting time between Peachford Hospital in Atlanta and Georgia Regional Hospital at Savannah, located in Savannah.

Centura Health’s Dr. William Choi Discharged the Most Medicare Patients with Spine Conditions in Colorado, Treating Over 450 Cases

Dexur analysts studied Colorado physicians who performed operations on the spine between January 2013 and December 2016 and found that Dr. William Choi outperformed any other physician in the state treating almost 100 more inpatient cases than the 2nd highest discharging physician. He led the state with 453 discharges, which was 92 more than the 2nd ranked Dr. Paul Stanton with 361 discharges. Dr. Roger D. Sung and Dr. Robert J. Benz joined Dr. Choi and Dr. Stanton as the only four physicians in the state to have operated on over 300 inpatients for conditions of the spine. Dr. Sung saw 333 Medicare inpatients, while Dr. Benz treated 324 during the same four-year time period. Dr. Hans C. Coester ranked 5th in the state with 290 spinal operations.

A Dexur study of Medicare inpatient coronary bypass data indicates that Dr. David A. Brown of OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital accounted for the lowest average length of stay (LOS) among all Ohio physicians at 4.7 days between 2013-2016. This was more than a day and a half lower than both the national and state averages of 6.49 and 6.46 days, respectively. Dr. Syed Zaman of Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton ranked 2nd at 5.2 days, while Dr. Fayyaz Haider Hashmi ranked 3rd at 5.3 days. These were the only three physicians in the state to report an average LOS under 6 days during the timeframe. Dr. Steven B. Duff of OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus ranked 4th at 6.1 days and Dr. Farzin Fotouhi of St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima rounded out the top five at 6.2 days.

According to a Dexur analysis of Washington physicians who treated Medicare inpatients for pulmonary edema and respiratory failure, Dr. Ahmed Salman of Providence Centralia Hospital averaged the lowest length of stay at just 2.4 days. Dr. Salman was the only physician in the state to have an average LOS under 3 days. Dr. Christopher MacCausland, also of Providence Centralia Hospital, ranked 2nd with an average LOS of 3.1 days. Three physicians then tied for 3rd at 3.3 days - Dr. Barbara Kraynek at Providence Regional Medical Center - Colby Campus, Dr. Mihret M. Asressahegn at Harrison Medical Center - Bremerton, and Dr. Yongqing Li at Samaritan Hospital.

A recent Dexur study of Medicare inpatient claims data from CMS indicates that Dr. Mark Groh of Mission Hospital in Asheville performed the most cardiac valve and cardiothoracic procedures out of all North Carolina physicians with 470 discharges between 2013-2016. Dr. Groh was the only physician in the state with more than 400 discharges during the time period. Three physicians from Duke University Hospital in Durham ranked 2nd through 4th. Dr. George C. Hughes ranked 2nd with 383 discharges, Dr. Donald D. Glower ranked 3rd with 356 discharges, and Dr. Jeffrey G. Gaca ranked 4th with 328 discharges. Dr. Barry Chan of Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte ranked 5th with 266 discharges.

According to a recent study conducted by Dexur analysts, there were three physicians in New Jersey who performed over 100 cholecystectomy procedures each between 2013 and 2016: Dr. Joseph J. Licata of The Valley Hospital, Dr. Sergey Grachev of Southern Ocean Medical Center and Dr. Emeka Acholonu of Virtua Voorhees Hospital. Dr. Licata led the state with 148 discharges during the four year period and was, followed by Dr. Grachev with 109 discharges. Dr. Acholonu was close behind Dr. Grachev with 103 discharges. The physicians ranked 4th and 5th, Dr. Francis James Kelly and Dr. Tarun Bhandari, both practiced primarily at Community Medical Center. Dr. Kelly had 97 Medicare inpatient discharges while Dr. Bhandari had 86.

Dexur research shows that Dr. John C. Stevenson of North Florida Regional Medical Center in Gainesville performed 819 spine procedures between 2013-2016, the most of any Florida physician. Dr. Constantine Toumbis ranked 2nd with 771 discharges while splitting time between Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River and Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness. These were the only two physicians in the state with over 700 spine discharges over the four year period. Dr. Richard A. Hynes of Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne ranked 3rd with 633 discharges, while Dr. James Paraiso of The Villages Regional Hospital, located in The Villages, ranked 4th with 529. Dr. Gary P. Colon of NCH Baker Hospital in Naples rounded out the top five with 504 discharges. No other Florida physician accounted for more than 500 discharges during the analyzed time frame.
