Dexur analysts conducted a study on CMS Medicare data from Arizona orthopedic physicians who performed hip and knee replacement surgeries in 2016 and determined that only four physicians in the state had a skilled nursing facility (SNF) discharge rate less than 10%. These physicians were Dr. Sherwood Duhon of Southwest Orthopedic and Spine Hospital, Dr. Neal Rockowitz also of Southwest, Dr. John Daryl Thompson of Banner Boswell Medical Center and CORE Institute Specialty Hospital, and Dr. John Maltry of Northwest Medical Center. SNF discharge rate is a quality metric that is typically a descriptor of the general health upon discharge for a particular patient population, as patients who have a lower baseline of health tend to be sicker and require more post-operative assistance.
