According to a recent analysis by Dexur using CMS administrative claims data from January through December 2016, St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey had a higher rate of inpatients admitted from the ED than the state and nation by 4.18% and 13.45%, respectively.  Dexur identified discharges with the ED as a source of admission for each hospital category, and then compared the rates at the hospital,  state and national level.  This metric is important to healthcare professionals because quality of care in the emergency department, considering the urgent workflow of the department, is often reviewed for potential improvements; it may also be indicative of a patient population’s approach to health and medical care.   Below is a graph showing the rate of discharges from ED admissions in several more popular hospital categories.
