Dexur’s analysis of the most recently available CMS data from January to December 2016 revealed that Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia had higher rates of readmission back to the same hospital than the state and national by 2.72% and 0.98%, respectively.  Emory University Hospital was the top discharging hospital by volume in Atlanta for Medicare inpatients, and the third highest in the state.  Dexur analyzed patients who were readmitted within 30 days and their rates of readmission to the same (index) hospital and to a different hospital.  30-day readmission rate is a widely used metric by healthcare professionals to evaluate quality of care; index hospital readmission rates are significant for determining quality of care for particular specialties at specific hospitals.
