Dexur’s analysis on 2016 CMS administrative claims revealed that Mercy Medical Center was the highest discharging hospital in Maryland for all spine diagnosis-related groups combined, and had the lowest 30-day readmission rate for DRG-460 (spinal fusion except cervical without major complication or comorbidity) in the state at 6.08%. Mercy Medical Center’s readmission rate was more than double less than that of the second ranked hospital’s readmission rate in the state. Only hospitals with a minimum of 3,500 Medicare inpatient discharges and at least 11 discharges at the DRG-level between January and December 2016 were included in this analysis. 30-day readmission rates are a common metric used by healthcare professionals to evaluate quality outcomes and cost of care.
