Carilion Medical Center’s Rate of Discharges to Skilled-Nursing Facilities is 8% Higher than Virginia State’s Rate

Dexur's recent analysis of CMS Medicare claims data for the time period of January through December 2016 revealed that Carilion Medical Center’s discharge rate to skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) was higher than the state and national averages by 8.42% and 7.9%, respectively.  Dexur identified Medicare inpatient discharges, discharges to SNFs, and the percentage of SNF discharges at the national, state, and individual hospital level.  SNF discharges are an important metric that healthcare professionals can use to determine the demographics of the population of patients a hospital serves, as well as the average state a patient is in at  point of discharge from a specific hospital.  Below is a graph highlighting the highest discharging categories at Carilion Medical Center and their percentage of discharges to SNFs compared to the state and national averages.
