Dexur analysts compared the 20 hospitals with the most CMS inpatient discharges for DRGs 001 and 002 from 2013 to 2016. The national average in-hospital mortality rate for DRG 001 patients was 11.94% from January 2013 to December 2016. St. Luke’s in-hospital mortality rate for these patients was 13% in this period, a 1% difference from national average. The other top 20 hospitals also average slightly higher mortality rates than the national average. The highest was 18% at Stanford Health Care (Stanford, CA), and the lowest 7% at Duke University Health System (Durham, NC).

CHI St. Luke’s Health - Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center is the Highest Volume Hospital for Coronary Bypass Procedures in the Greater Houston Area and #2 in All of Texas

A Dexur study of coronary bypass data from U.S. Medicare enrollees indicates that CHI St. Luke's Health - Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston accounted for 169 total coronary bypass discharges in 2016, the most of any hospital within the Greater Houston area. The only hospital in the entire state of Texas to see more coronary bypass discharges than Baylor St. Luke’s was Methodist Hospital, located in San Antonio, which accounted for 227 discharges. Within the Greater Houston area, Houston Methodist Hospital was not far behind Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, as Houston Methodist ranked 2nd in volume out of all Greater Houston hospitals with 161 discharges. Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center ranked 3rd with 94 discharges, Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital ranked 4th with 65 and Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center ranked 5th with 52. Although the three Memorial Hermann facilities ranked 3rd through 5th, a substantial drop-off in volume can be observed between the top two and subsequent three highest volume hospitals.
