A Dexur study of inpatient Medicare claims data from 2016 indicates that Dr. John P. Sutton, of Providence Health in Columbia, accounted for the lowest average length of stay (LOS) in South Carolina for coronary bypass discharges at 3.8 days. Dr. Sutton was the only physician in the state to report an average LOS under 5 days. Dr. Edward M. Leppard, who also practices at Providence Health, ranked 2nd with an average LOS of exactly 5 days. Two physicians from St. Francis Downtown in Greenville, Dr. Jeffrey Michael Griffin and Dr. Hugh M. Dennis, tied for 3rd in the rankings with an average length of stay of 5.1 days. Dr. John Matthew Toole, of Roper Hospital in Charleston, rounded out the top five with a 5.5 day average LOS. These were the only five physicians in the state of South Carolina to account for an average LOS under 6 days for coronary bypass procedures in 2016.
