University of Louisville Hospital had the Lowest Average Length of Stay in Kentucky for Cellulitis in 2016

Dexur analysts recently examined all Medicare cellulitis discharge data for major Kentucky hospitals in 2016 and found that University of Louisville Hospital had the lowest average length of stay (LOS) at 3.16 days. Three other hospitals also reported an average LOS under 3.5 days; Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital, located in Somerset, ranked 2nd with a 3.21 day average LOS, Norton Brownsboro Hospital in Louisville ranked 3rd with a 3.24 day average LOS, and St. Elizabeth Florence ranked 4th with an average length of stay of 3.47 days. Norton Women’s & Children’s Hospital, yet another facility in Louisville, rounded out the top 5 with a 3.56 day average length of stay.
CMS inpatient discharge data was analyzed, specifically, for the time period of January - December 2016. Kentucky hospitals were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 3,500 total inpatient discharges and at least 11 discharges for DRG-603, which refers to cellulitis without major complication or comorbidity. During the analyzed time frame, all Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. averaged a 4.05 day length of stay, compared to a 3.99 day average LOS for Medicare enrollees from Kentucky.
University of Louisville Hospital also ranked very highly in Kentucky for average length of stay for cellulitis during January 2013 - December 2016. During this four year time period, University of Louisville Hospital ranked 2nd out of all Kentucky hospitals with a 3.41 day average length of stay, 0.25 days higher than their average length of stay for 2016 alone, indicating improvement in treatment at the conditional level. The only hospital to report a lower average LOS than the University of Louisville Hospital during this time period was Norton Brownsboro Hospital, which accounted for an average length of stay of 3.26 days for DRG-603.
