Treating bloodstream infections earlier may prevent progression to sepsis, one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. According to T2Biosystems, for patients at risk of sepsis, rapid targeted treatment based on the identification of causative pathogens is critical because it is estimated that every hour of speeding up the time to targeted therapy decreases patient mortality by nearly 8%

Dexur analyzed Jan 2018 to Dec 2018 Medicare claims data to find out the In-hospital and 30 day mortality rate of Bacterial Sepsis for different hospitals across the United States. This analysis was done by considering diagnoses related to Bacterial species causing Sepsis as the primary diagnosis.

The 30 Day Mortality rate of all Sepsis DRGs with Bacterial Sepsis is at 15% in the United States. Within the Sepsis DRG group, DRG 870 (SEPTICEMIA OR SEVERE SEPSIS W MV 96+ HOURS) with Bacterial Sepsis has the highest 30 day mortality rate at 45%. DRG 871 (SEPTICEMIA OR SEVERE SEPSIS W/O MV 96+ HOURS W MCC) with Bacterial Sepsis has the most hospitalization and with a mortality rate of 18%.

Below is a list of selected hospitals and the mortality rates with Bacterial sepsis.

Mayo Clinic Hospital, Rochester and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles have a lower 30 day mortality rate of Bacterial Sepsis with 6% and 9% respectively, which is less than the United States average of 15%. Memorial Hermann Health System of Houston, Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven and Montefiore Medical Center has a higher than national 30 day mortality rate of 16%, 22% and 19% respectively.

The T2Bacteria Panel developed by T2Biosystems provides species identification in 3 to 5 hours whereas the other methods take 1 to 5 days or more. By incorporating the Panel as part of the sepsis bundle, physicians can get more patients on the right therapy faster, potentially preventing the progression of sepsis, while increasing the chances of both patient survival and recovery.
