A study from Dexur analysts on Medicare inpatient stent procedure discharge data shows that Dr. Sasidhar Guthikonda of Piedmont Fayette Hospital in Fayetteville, Georgia accounted for the lowest 30-day readmission rate of any physician in the state between 2013-2016 at 8.2%. Dr. Christopher R. Leach of Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville ranked 2nd at 8.8% and Dr. James Michael Ware who shares his time between Redmond Regional Medical Center and Floyd Medical Center, both in Rome, ranked 3rd at 10%. Dr. Charles Frederick Jackson, also of Redmond Regional Medical Center ranked 4th at 11.2% and Dr. Ahad Manzoor Ul Hassan of Hamilton Medical Center, located in Dalton, ranked 5th at 11.6%.
Physicians in Georgia were included in the rankings if they accounted for at least 11 readmissions for DRG-247 (Percutaneous Cardiovascular Procedures With Drug-Eluting Stent Without Major Complication or Comorbidity) between January 2013 - December 2016. During this timeframe, Medicare enrollees throughout the U.S. had an 11.16% readmission rate at the DRG level compared to a 10.45% rate from Georgia Medicare enrollees. It is important to note that readmissions from all physicians were included in the national and state averages, regardless of whether they accounted for 11 or more readmissions.
Along with accounting for the lowest DRG-247 readmission rate of any physician in Georgia, Dr. Guthikonda also reported the lowest average length of stay in the state at 2.7 days. Dr. Mark D. Cohen of Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany ranked 2nd at 2.9 days. Dr. Syed T. Rab of Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Dr. Allison G. Dupont of Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville and the aforementioned Dr. Leach tied for 3rd at 3 days. Along with Dr. Guthikonda and Dr. Leach, Dr. Kraig Wangsnes of University Hospital in Augusta and Dr. Dupont also cracked the top 10 in both rankings; Dr. Wangsnes tied for the 6th lowest readmission rate at 12.3% and the 6th lowest average LOS at 3.1 days while Dr. Dupont had the 8th lowest readmission rate at 12.4%.
